Hard stops to check first
- Active tests and component commands need a scanner whose specs declare bidirectional control (Autel MaxiCOM MK808S). Code readers can read and clear codes but cannot command components.
- Engine-only code readers cannot read ABS or airbag (SRS) codes.
- A Bluetooth scanner has no screen of its own and needs a paired iPhone or Android phone.
- System coverage varies by make, model, year and trim. Check the maker’s coverage list for your exact car before buying.
