How many amps do I need to jump-start my car?
For most 4-cylinder gas cars, a portable unit rated around 600–1000 peak amps is plenty. Midsize engines want roughly 1000–1500A, large V6–V8 engines 1500–2000A, and diesels or big-blocks 2000A and up. Size to your largest vehicle and you are covered for everything smaller.
What is the difference between peak amps and cranking amps?
Peak amps is the highest instantaneous current a unit can deliver, and it is the number brands put on the box. The current that actually matters is the sustained cranking output while the engine turns over, which is lower and often not advertised. Because peak-amp claims are measured inconsistently, treat them as rough guidance rather than an exact spec.
Do I need more amps in cold weather?
Yes. Cold weakens the battery and thickens the oil, so the engine is harder to turn over exactly when your jump starter has less to give. If you regularly park or drive below freezing, size up toward the top of your range or the next tier, and pick a unit rated for low-temperature use.
Can a jump starter be too powerful for a small car?
No. A higher-rated unit delivers only as much current as the engine draws, so a 2000A pack will start a compact just fine. Buying more capacity than you strictly need is a reasonable way to future-proof and to guarantee a start on a cold morning.
Are amps the only thing that matters?
